Description of obverse and reverse

Reverse. The Perth Mint pioneers a revolutionary concept giving this coin a unique construction which allows the outer coin to revolve around a central core. To celebrate Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historical achievement of being the first man in space and the first to orbit the Earth on 12 April 1961, the reverse design portrays a montage of images symbolising his epic journey. The design, which includes the border inscription “1961 FIRST MAN IN SPACE – YURI GAGARIN”, revolves around a central, coloured image of Earth.
Coin is issued as legal tender of the Government of the Cook Islands.
Obverse: the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II”, “COOK ISLANDS”, the monetary denomination, and the weight and purity of the metal, surrounding another coloured image of the Earth.
