Description of obverse and reverse

The obverse design bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA” and the monetary denomination.
Reverse: the beautiful and haunting sounds of the Humpback Whale continue to grace the great oceans of the world. The reverse design depicts a coloured image of a Humpback Whale, a 40 tonnes mammal that journeys each year between Antarctic waters and favoured mating grounds around Australia. The whale is presented within an outline of Antarctica with its clear blue sky and majestic icebergs.
Coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
